Frieze 2021

on until 22 Oct 2021

if the art market had one symbol Frieze would be it

A specific Friezey mix of expensive art with people that could have also been part of a Hollywood film.

Everybody looks like a star here!

Sure there are the ones who saved up to be able to afford the ticket entrance, but the majority of attendees looked like they spent a good part of the day polishing their look before attending this seriously.

This aspect of the fair I felt was a bit stifling but what made up for it was, you guessed it: the art.

A lot of what was on display did not actually look like art in the traditional sense of the word. Sure there were paintings and sculptures, but there were a lot of objects that were hard to categorise or even define. One that caught my eye was the work by artist Veronica Ryan. She mixed locker shelves, tea bags, fruit bags, mango stones, fabric and fishing line. Frieze is great because it brings together under one roof, the work of famous heavy weight artists and that of lesser known emerging ones.

Juxtaposed are polite works of art next to the rude and boisterous.

Frieze is a place of many contrasts, and lest not we forget:

…champagne.
